3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 egg yolks
3 cups milk
2 tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
To make the custard, bring first 5 ingredients to a boil in a heavy saucepan over medium to low heat (about 10-15 minutes), stirring constantly with a whisk and a spatula.
Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla until smooth and combined.
Let cool completely before using.
